This is the third installment in the staff and the sword series.
I really enjoyed this book. It was well put together and was a smooth transition between the books. The characters continue to grow and evolve. Even the sub-characters all had a purpose and helped the story progress. The climax was a bit forced and could have been more smooth. Some of the questions that were asked were never answered. The book ends with a happy ending that suits it well enough. Overall though, I am very pleased with this series and hope he writes another series. I got this book from Bethany Publishers in exchange for this review. I have been absent for too long but I will try to be more active.
Being unstoppable is about believing and achieving. It’s about having faith in yourself, your talents, your purpose, and most of all, in God’s great love and His divine plan for your life. Millions around the world recognize the smiling face and inspirational messages of Nick Vujicic. Born without arms or legs, Nick has not allowed his physical challenges to keep him from enjoying great adventures, a fulfilling and meaningful career, and loving relationships. Nick has overcome trials and hardships by focusing on the promises that he was created for a unique and specific purpose, that his life has value and is a gift to others, and that even though he may endure hardships, God is always present and in control. Nick credits his success to the power that is unleashed when we put our faith into action. But how does that happen? In Unstoppable Nick offers guidance and inspiration for dealing with: Personal crises Self-destructive thoughts, emotions, and addictions Relationship issues Bullying, persecution, cruelty, and intolerance Career and job challenges Imbalance in body, mind, heart, and spirit Health and disability concerns Feeling out of control In sharing compelling stories of his own experiences and those of many others, Nick explains how anyone can create a “ridiculously good life” and become unstoppable. What’s standing in your way? Are you ready to become unstoppable? This book is very inspiring. Nick Vujicic, who was born without arms or legs, shows that you can do anything you choose to do. This book shows him going through life because of religious beliefs and pure willpower. The pictures are beautiful and add reality to the book. Most memoirs and biographies are not personal and it added something special. The only down side to this book is it is slightly repetitive and very religious. I am personally not very religious but it was still an inspiring story. I got this book in return for a free review from Waterbrook Press. Yay two reviews in one day.
For young Leonhard Euler, the Bernoulli family have been more than just friends. Master Johann has been a demanding mentor, and his sons have been Leonhard's allies and companions. But it is also a family torn by jealousy and distrust. Father and sons are engaged in a ruthless competition for prestige among the mathematical elites of Europe, especially the greatest prize: the Chair of Mathematics at the University of Basel, which Johann holds and his sons want. And now, their aspirations may have turned deadly. Lured into an investigation of the suspicious death of Uncle Jacob twenty years ago, Leonhard soon realizes there's more at stake than even a prominent appointment. Surrounded by the most brilliant--and cunning--minds of his generation, Leonhard is forced to see how dangerous his world is. His studies in mathematics have always been entwined with his thoughts on theology, and now, caught in a deadly battle of wills, he'll need both his genius and his faith to survive. This book is written in the first person and I do not particularly care for books written in this fashion. I do love the history that is involved in the writing in this book. The main character is a real amazing mathematician and the family Bernoulli is a real family too. Some parts of the book are hard to understand because you are in the first person and you have to figure it out yourself. THis book does require concentrarion because the main character is a mathematician and a very brilliant man. This book is a long read but very good and filled with mystery. I truly liked the mystery and history behind this book. I recommend this to history buffs and people who are into mystery. I don't think younger people would appreciate it as much but it is good. I received this book complimentary of Bethany House Publishers. Thank you for it This is the third installment in the Merlin's Immortals series.
Will this dangerous quest lead the outcast Orphan King toward an ancient secret—or to certain destruction? Posing as a beggar, Thomas escapes Magnus after fifteen men, who are calling themselves the Priests of the Holy Grail, arrive and take control of the castle through wondrous acts and apparent miracles. With the help of his longtime friend Gervaise, Thomas sets out on a journey that leads him to the ancient Holy Land. Unaware that Katherine and Hawkwood are watching over him, Thomas is tested in his beliefs and comes face to face with the ancient power that the Merlins and Druids have long been searching for. Enter the world of Merlin’s Immortals, where ancient secrets and evil conspiracies take you on a breathless adventure of discovery, intrigue, and hidden knowledge. This book has a steady rhythm throughout the beginning and quickly speeds up toward the end. It is filled with mysteries and action. All the characters are memorable and well written. He continuously throughout the book demonstrates his battle with what he wants to believe and what is being force fed to him. I enjoyed this book a lot. This series in general is well written and a good read. I recommend this book to people older than ten and those who enjoy medieval stories with hints of religious tones. I received a free copy of this book from WaterBrook Multnomah. Thank you for the book. I'm sorry for missing the holiday seasons review. I will bring it back with a newer book.
Cath is a Simon Snow fan. Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan, but for Cath, being a fan is her life--and she's really good at it. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it's what got them through their mother leaving. Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fan fiction, dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere. Cath's sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can't let go. She doesn't want to. Now that they're going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn't want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside of her comfort zone. She's got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend, a fiction-writing professor who thinks fan fiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words . . . And she can't stop worrying about her dad, who's loving and fragile and has never really been alone. For Cath, the question is: Can she do this? Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? Writing her own stories? And does she even want to move on if it means leaving Simon Snow behind? This book was released in 2013 so it is recent. I, myself, am a fangirl. So I expected a lot more than i received. I do like this book don't get me wrong. The main character is Cath and most teenage girls should be able to relate. She is an average nerd girl in college. I enjoyed this book a lot but it was not what I expected and not my type of book, but I enjoyed it. I recommend this to all people who are fangirls of Harry Potter and fanfiction writers/readers. Author's website Where to buy it Wow I'm late I apologize. This next book is the third installment of the Percy Jackson Series.
When the goddess Artemis goes missing, she is believed to have been kidnapped. And now it's up to Percy and his friends to find out what happened. Who is powerful enough to kidnap a goddess? They must find Artemis before the winter solstice, when her influence on the Olympian Council could swing an important vote on the war with the titans. Not only that, but first Percy will have to solve the mystery of a rare monster that Artemis was hunting when she disappeared-a monster rumored to be so powerful it could destroy Olympus forever. This book is just as amazing as all the rest. The main difference is we actually have some death involved, I won't say who, and we have more gods and heroes introduced. The writing is still great and young people can relate to Percy and Friends. I recommend this to every one. I also have a special planned out fpor this series when it ends and I want to see how well it works. I want to do it for Lord Of The Rings and Harry Potter Etc. So this past week I finished the second book in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians Series. I have stated be fore that I love this series and this is my like twentieth time reading it. Next week you shall get the Third Book. So, now to the review.
After a summer spent trying to prevent a catastrophic war among the Greek gods, Percy Jackson finds his seventh-grade school year unnervingly quiet. His biggest problem is dealing with his new friend, Tyson-a six-foot-three, mentally challenged homeless kid who follows Percy everywhere, making it hard for Percy to have any "normal" friends. But things don't stay quiet for long. Percy soon discovers there is trouble at Camp Half-Blood: the magical borders which protect Half-Blood Hill have been poisoned by a mysterious enemy, and the only safe haven for demigods is on the verge of being overrun by mythological monsters. To save the camp, Percy needs the help of his best friend, Grover, who has been taken prisoner by the Cyclops Polyphemus on an island somewhere in the Sea of Monsters, the dangerous waters Greek heroes have sailed for millennia-only today, the Sea of Monsters goes by a new name the Bermuda Triangle. Now Percy and his friends-Grover, Annabeth, and Tyson-must retrieve the Golden Fleece from the Island of the Cyclopes by the end of the summer or Camp Half-Blood will be destroyed. But first, Percy will learn a stunning new secret about his family-one that makes him question whether being claimed as Poseidon's son is an honor or simply a cruel joke. This is a great story to teach to kids when they need to get to know their Greek Gods. In seventh grade they read me the first book and I was hooked with the entire series. Percy is an average kid, making it easy for kids to read and relate to the characters. The plot contains mentions of past mythology and is very entertaining to read. I have loved this series for a very long time. I recommend this book Yay I missed an entire week, or two, maybe three. Anyway I'm back on schedule, I think, probably. This book is not for the fainthearted and very graphic. Viewer Discretion Advised. Celie is a poor black woman whose letters tell the story of 20 years of her life, beginning at age 14 when she is being abused and raped by her father and attempting to protect her sister from the same fate, and continuing over the course of her marriage to "Mister," a brutal man who terrorizes her. Celie eventually learns that her abusive husband has been keeping her sister's letters from her and the rage she feels, combined with an example of love and independence provided by her close friend Shug, pushes her finally toward an awakening of her creative and loving self. This is probably the first book that I read after I watched the movie. The reason read this book is that in my class we have to do a banned book essay which I will post below. The Color Purple starts out with the birth of Celie's first child, there is no warning and I was not expecting such graphic details. Alice Walker makes you want to cry in pity for this girl who is so horribly abused by the people in her life. The foreword part of the book does not even warn you about the first page. I am not sure how I feel about this book. I am disgusted and pained when I look at it but I also like the formatting. It is written in letters sent to God and later Nettie. The format can be a little hard to follow and the characters can be confusing. I do not recommend this book to almost everyone. If you are a man I don't recommend reading this unless you never want children. I don't recommend this book to most women because it will once again turn you off of childbirth and make you look at men differently. If you are a really brave son of a bitch and want to try, go for it, but remember that I warned you.
This is the second installment of the Bloody Jack series by L.A. Meyer.
After being forced to leave HMS Dolphin and Jaimy, her true love, Jacky Faber is making a new start at the elite Lawson Peabody School for Young Girls in Boston. But growing up on the streets of London and fighting pirates never prepared Jacky for her toughest battle yet: learning how to be a fine lady. Everything she does is wrong. Her embroidery is deplorable, her French is atrocious, and her table manners--disgusting! Then there's the small matter of her blue anchor tattoo. . . . Despite her best efforts, Jacky can't seem to stay out of trouble long enough to dedicate herself to being ladylike. But what fun would that be, anyway? I adore this book like I did the first one. The main character, Jacky, is so adorable and naive. She tries to make it as a lady in Boston and ends up failing. There are so many ups and downs to this story. I enjoyed reading about Jacky and her many misadventures. The way it is written is still annoying, because I am passionate about grammar. In all this book is a great read. I recommend this book to the same audience as the first one, an adventuring loving sorts. |
